Hidden Graffitti

BA (Hons) Fine Art: Painting

I am engaged in practice based research, creating and developing new directions in my paintings using London as the city environment for exploring ideas about displacement and identity, and investigating methods of application of these ideas into the visual language of contemporary painting. These interests are multi–layered and create possibilities for further research and development. Using the city as a starting point for forming narratives in my work is key to unlocking my interest in the use of chance elements as visceral responses to the different environments I encounter e.g. the streets of London. This is created though several different formal mechanisms, such as painting, drawing, photography. The main element in my research is experimentation in trying to pursue new imagery, creating a visual dynamism where formal elements are reduced to their most simplest, so the images are strong and distinctive. The juxtapositions of strong colour with monochromes, shapes of varying size, near and far viewpoints, organic and man-made, reflect individual and collective identities of people interacting with the identity of the built environment, with the placements of shapes and visual elements reflecting displacements, both physical and psychologically as experienced by people.
