MA Fine Art
My practice explores the intersection between drawing and painting, investigating how a graphical sensibility can interact within the world of abstraction. An expressive release is vital, capturing a sense of life and energy in the interaction between marks and shapes. Drawing brings a simplicity and directness that is a crucial starting point. I then transfer these marks up in scale from the sketchbook, acting as a structure for the larger canvases. Stencilling, tracing and printing techniques all come in to play, as I experiment with new ways to make marks and approach the creation of a final image. I arrived at Chelsea from Liverpool, where I was co-director of the artist-led group studio and gallery âThe Royal Standardâ. I curated and participated in many group shows, utilizing the variety of spaces within the city to explore new exhibition concepts and ways to engage audiences, particularly during the Liverpool Biennial. Studying at Chelsea has allowed me to channel these experiences into an intense period of investigation, exploring paintings place within the broader fine art landscape. After graduation I will continue to exhibit my work within London and further afield, developing pieces with the boldness and lasting resonance of my MA show. To build on the success of previous exhibitions such as Crash Open 2012 at Charlie Dutton Gallery, and âTo Boldly Goâ and âHoneymoonâ at Chelsea will be a key aim. I will continue to gain teaching experience within Fine Art education, pursuing roles as a visiting artist and lecturer to assist students with realising their own ideas. www.hamishmclain.com
