Statement 2013 The back lit light of digital screens generate a simulation of a well working interface to information. Screens appear everywhere, they communicate a humdrum of duplication and replication; it is almost unstoppable and certainly irreversible. My work examines how the Internet user is becoming increasingly detuned to the presence of the screen. Behind the phosphorescing interface there is a complex and concealed network; my focus is in the fleeting moments when the Internet is interrupted by a glitch, briefly freeing the machine of its functionality, bringing the physical presence of the screen carcass into view. My practice investigates a sense of detachment from multi-sensory experience and loss of the meaningful caused by the Internet’s rapid speeds of information exchange; with the user becoming subservient to the icy grid of the web, I admit I am complicit in this cultural shift. The glitch creates a dialogue to reawaken the possibilities of painting as a dialectical response to digital aesthetics; by aping the appearance of the glitch over many hours in pigment I hopefully allude to a sense of the uncanny. As part of an overall strategy I produce paintings in conjunction with sound and moving image to pose the question that an image might exist in multiple states as interfaces staring back at each other. My work as an overview attempts to claim back perceptions of authenticity in countenance to the parallel wilderness and the affecting loss of meaning we have inherited from the Internet.
