I am interested in showing the potential of costumed performance practice and drawing, alongside semiotic theory, to examine costumic meanings on and between costumed dancers of the Wuppertal Tanztheater as a dialectical component of performance. The term 'semiotic' in my research refers to Julia Kristeva's psycho-linguistic understanding of signs. I am interested in engaging with DVD material of the costumed dancers by making a series of drawings, which will visually share how I see them in recorded performance. Costumic meanings in these drawings can then be placed back under the lens of live performance through costumed practice. I hope that my work will prvide a new viewpoint on the contribution of costume as a dialectical component of performance, and will reflect on the under-representation of costume in current performance discourse.
