Influenced by early experimental video and performance art, Tess Faria draws upon notions of the everyday. By conflating familiar actions or routines and presenting them in an unfamiliar context, Faria challenges the ordinary. When recorded, repetition shifts perception: thus, a familiar activity, even when ordinary in nature, ultimately becomes absurd. Confusing actions and context, the artist creates a narrative, which is recognisable, but also slightly puzzling. Yet she does not consider this an exercise in the surreal: her aim is to present the ordinary in a fresh context. The intention is to approach reality from a different perspective, using the familiar to challenge perceptions of social behaviour.
