MA Fine Art
I use video, audio, performance, and installation to examine the relationship between masculine image and clothing. By considering the notion of masculinity as a construction and the male body as a site of performance, I explore individual and group identity in the context of popular cultural forms such as music, cinema, theatre and dance. As meaning is generated from socially agreed principles of difference, I am interested in how âcultural normsâ are exploited or subverted, and âothernessâ is created and perceived. Art historical referents and cultural signifiers are utilized as a way of investigating representation, authenticity and fake and my prop and costume making within individually choreographed performances demonstrates how cultural meanings are conveyed via ritual, the devotional, and the emblematic.
