'knitting the houses round'

MA Textile Design

My practice is based on a belief that mindful design can bring about positive social change. The central premise of my work is one that questions the sustainability of materials, places value on slower consumption and respects integrity in all aspects of production. My research focuses on the ethical and environmental advantages of manufacturing in the U.K. It addresses the link between the loss of a traditional manufacturing economy and its cultural heritage. Exploring to what extent our cultural identity is defined by its industry. Having worked closely with British wool farmers and industry experts, I have created a range of hand dyed, fine yarns – entirely sourced and processed within the U.K. My practice creates a traceable, sustainable supply chain, which follows flock to garment. Despite the industry reticence to use British wool, my research aims to reveal its unrealised potential within the current market. My designs investigate nostalgic notions of British identity, drawing on folk customs and institutional tradition; exploring simple shapes, thoughtful details and muted colours.
